Reducing the Impact of Single Serve Coffee

Reducing the Impact of Single Serve Coffee

Single serve coffee is convenient and popular, but creates significant amounts of waste. SSC used life cycle assessment methodologies to measure the environmental impacts and to assess the end-of-life options of a particular coffee company’s single-serve laminated plastic packaging material. The assessment resulted in a redesign of the primary plastic packaging materials, reducing the overall carbon footprint by over 30% and increasing the potential recyclability of the packaging. SSC then developed an end-of-life management strategy including communication and education for customers on the most sustainable management options for the coffee pods.

Reducing Facility Waste and Costs

Reducing Facility Waste and Costs

SSC worked with a Fortune 500 Pharmaceutical company to measure, characterize, and quantify material flows and all waste streams in order to properly understand facility operations. After evaluating the current system, SSC developed a waste diversion program strategy for two facilities resulting in a total of $2,300,000 in cost savings and over 570,000 lbs. of waste diversion opportunities. This operation zero waste strategy prepared this company to achieve Waste Diversion from Landfill certification from GreenCircle Certified.
