Why shouldn’t existing (old) buildings integrate sustainable design features? The James A. Byrne Courthouse on East Market Street recently installed 369 Sanyo photovoltaic modules designed by SSC which will produce electricity to offset their energy usage. The solar array is 81kW and required zero roof penetrations, which reduced labor and costs while maintaining the building’s overall integrity. The system is located on the 22nd floor, which makes it the tallest photovoltaic installation in all of Philadelphia. The Byrne Courthouse will now produce enough solar energy to power 7.5 homes every year or offset 60.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
