Vinyl Siding Institute – Sustainability Resource

Working closely with the Vinyl Siding Institute (VSI) since 2008, SSC has assisted the organization in evaluating and disclosing the environmental impacts of vinyl siding. Through life cycle assessments, industry research and publications, lobbying efforts, webinars, and training development, SSC and VSI have demonstrated the environmental and performance attributes of vinyl siding. Currently, SSC provides continued support by leading bimonthly webinars which discuss key industry data on the LCA of vinyl siding and are approved through the GBCI for continuing education.

“SSC has a long-standing relationship with VSI and has provided a variety of services, including GBCI CEU certification of courses. We appreciate their expertise and ability to navigate us through the process.”
- Matt Dobson, Senior Director, Code & Regulatory, Vinyl Siding Institute

Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association – Life Cycle Assessment

Uni-Bell's mission is to promote the use of PVC pipe in water and wastewater systems through efforts including environmental transparency. SSC is conducting an industry-wide LCA of PVC pipe, coordinating with 23 facilities across North America to collect primary data on PVC pipe production. SSC is providing a high level of accuracy for raw material impacts by using the recently updated life cycle inventory of PVC resin production from The Vinyl Institute. The resulting LCA data will allow municipalities to make informed decisions about pipe materials based on cost, performance and environmental impacts. This data will also be used by Uni-Bell’s corporate members to fully understand the sources of their environmental impacts and facilitate sustainable product development and sustainable procurement procedures.

“The team at Sustainable Solutions Corporation is working closely with the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association to conduct a life cycle study, and have been extremely professional in working with our members. They are experts in the field and have been very adept at providing a high-quality, credible assessment of PVC pipe products and processes in an efficient manner. The LCA results will assist organization members in identifying opportunities for improvement and sustainable product development.”
- Bruce Hollands, Executive Director, Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association

Gamesa Sustainability Assessment

Gamesa contracted SSC to perform a Sustainability Assessment of its Fairless Hills, PA facility. Representatives from SSC performed multiple site visits and evaluations to benchmark current operations and identify opportunities for improvement. SSC located several low- and no-cost upgrades that were implemented to enhance the performance of the plant. The SSC team also assisted Gamesa in source reduction and recycling initiatives to advance the efficiency of the plant’s operations. Financial savings from all proposed Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) were valued at approximately $100,000 annually.

"Gamesa engaged with Tad and Sustainable Solutions to find creative ways to save on our energy usage and improve the operation of our plant. Tad is obviously an expert in the industry and his deep knowledge allowed him to address our needs holistically. He wasn't married to any particular solution, and wasn't trying to sell us anything, but creatively addressed our plant as a whole and identified the best value solutions for our particular situation. I would definitely recommend Tad and Sustainable Solutions to any company who wants the best available knowledge and an unbiased, realistic approach to saving energy and saving money."
- Robert Murray C.P.M., Strategic Sourcing Manager, Gamesa

CertainTeed Corporation LCAs and EPDs

SSC played an integral role in developing and publishing a series of EPDs covering 19 mineral fiber ceiling product families – the industry’s first for ceilings products. The process began with SSC conducting Life Cycle Assessments for CertainTeed Ceilings, which provided the data utilized to develop the EPDs. SSC worked with The Green Standard and CertainTeed to harmonize an existing ceiling panel Product Category Rule (PCR), which served as the basis for development of the EPDs. The EPDs were then third-party verified and published by The Green Standard.

“The EPDs provide transparent information about the environmental impact of our ceiling products, giving architects and designers the confidence that our products deliver on the promises we have made.”
- Dawn Chittick, Director of Marketing, CertainTeed Ceilings

Hartz Mountain, Sheraton Lincoln Harbor Hotel - LEED CI Silver Certification

Notably, there were no additional costs associated with installing LEED specified products versus conventional manufacturing products.

Speaking to the value of LEED certification, Michael Zayas, Sheraton Lincoln Harbor General Manager, explained, “We wanted to make a bold statement about our commitment to sustainability to our employees, our guests and our constituents while showing our competition what is possible.”

Saint-Gobain Sustainable Product Design

Most manufacturers use some type of stage/gate New Product Development (NPD) process. Sustainable Product Development (SPD) allows product development teams to consider alternative materials, processes, sourcing, marketing, and other aspects of a product which can result in decreased environmental impacts throughout the product's cradle-to-grave life. The SPD methodology includes a set of tools and strategies that can integrate seamlessly into a company's existing NPD process.

"Our increased emphasis on sustainability has helped us identify and implement critical initatives that reduce water and energy use as well as divert waste from landfills. We have learned that even simple modifications can have a big impact."
- Chris Altmansberger, (Former) Vice President of Operations Support and Process Sustainability, CertainTeed Corporation
