Walking the Talk: Planning Our Zero Waste Happy Hour

SSC specializes in helping our clients achieve their zero waste to landfill goals for both facilities and events. We are utilizing our proven process to eliminate waste generation at the source and ensure the use of effective diversion methods at our happy hour.

At SSC, we take every opportunity to further our mission of empowering positive global change. Prioritizing a fun and engaging happy hour without sacrificing sustainability demonstrates our commitment to upholding our mission and values.

Steps We Are Taking to Achieve a Zero Waste Happy Hour

We began our discussions with the Academy of Natural Sciences and 12th Street Catering months in advance to design out waste and coordinate diversion methods for all waste streams at the event. Our customized roadmap for our happy hour includes, but is not limited to:

Coordinating Compost Services

Coordinating with Circle Compost, a Philadelphia-based, woman-owned composting company, to ensure that food scraps will be picked up and effectively composted.

Streamlining Recycling Efforts

Working with the Academy of Natural Sciences to streamline recycling efforts and confirm diversion with the Academy’s current hauler.

Designing the Event Space with Reusable Décor

Planning for all event décor to be reusable - no balloons or single-use decorations will be found at our event.

Eliminating Waste Generation at the Source

Collaborating with 12th Street Catering, a Philadelphia-based, woman-owned catering company, to:

  • Eliminate single-serve condiments and other single-use prep materials.

  • Serve beer in original bottles and cans instead of pouring into cups.

  • Replace plastic cups for wine and other beverages with aluminum cups that are infinitely recyclable.

  • Rent reusable tablecloths for all tables used in the space.

How You Can Help

The key to success for achieving a zero waste event is collaboration. Below are a few things you can do to help us achieve our goal:

  • Refrain from bringing coffee cups, food wrappers, or other personal waste items into the event.

  • Take only what you can enjoy to help reduce food and beverage waste.

  • Be mindful of signage. Take a moment to read signage on waste bins to ensure items are disposed of correctly.

  • If you are unsure about how to properly dispose of something, ask an SSC team member. We will be easy to spot in our green shoes and we are always happy to help!
