Single serve coffee is convenient and popular, but creates significant amounts of waste. SSC used life cycle assessment methodologies to measure the environmental impacts and to assess the end-of-life options of a particular coffee company’s single-serve laminated plastic packaging material. The assessment resulted in a redesign of the primary plastic packaging materials, reducing the overall carbon footprint by over 30% and increasing the potential recyclability of the packaging. SSC then developed an end-of-life management strategy including communication and education for customers on the most sustainable management options for the coffee pods.
